Everyone loves masks. Though we like to think they come with a possibility of clear and smooth skin, no wrinkles, and no pores, no such miracle can occur with a few applications. But, they can be a great addition to your skin care routine and help you get to your desired skin goal!
So, how do masks work?
First, understand that not everything in your mask is effectively going in (aka, smoothie masks are not the same as putting all the fruits on your skin). So, look at the ACTIVE ingredients. Just like any serum or thick moisturizer, a mask should have a delivery agent and be left on for a reasonable amount of time for your skin to absorb them.
Stick to using a mask one or two times a week MAX. Take it from a dermatologist, overdoing it with skin is never a great idea and changing the pH dramatically multiple times a week can cause cracking and breakouts.
Know your skin type first. Look for the basics: chemical exfoliant or hydration (peptides, hyaluronic acid) or active agents (antioxidants or directed medication like sulfur or benzoyl peroxide). If it is a drying agent (clay, sulfur) make sure to put on serum or moisturizer after no matter the skin type!
Oily skin + Acne prone:
When to apply them?
After a warm shower— The moisture helps absorb ingredient better into the skin (hence we tell you to use moisturizers on the body and face after you shower).
On a clean face- free of makeup and other agents
Leave on for at least 15-30 minutes. Allow the active agents to actually penetrate (watch a 30 minute show!)
